Fact The Dark Side of the Moon

Fact The Dark Side of the Moon

The Dark Side of the Moon refers to the hemisphere of the Moon that is permanently turned away from Earth due to the Moon’s synchronous rotation. Contrary to the name, it is not always dark — it receives sunlight just like the near side, but its phases occur opposite to what we see from Earth. This hidden half remained unseen by humans until the Soviet spacecraft Luna 3 photographed it in 1959, revealing a rugged, heavily cratered landscape vastly different from the smoother, maria-filled near side. The term is also famously associated with Pink Floyd’s 1973 album, though in astronomy it’s more accurately called the “far side of the Moon.”
