Matching 240 Million-Year-Old Dinosaur Footprints Found on Both Sides of...
Fascinating discovery spanning millions of years has emerged as researchers have uncovered more than 260 matching dinosaur tracks on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean. This revelation not only sheds light on ancient migration paths but also offers critical insights into the breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana. The tracks, preserved in what is now northern Cameroon and northeastern Brazil, have provided scientists with remarkable evidence of an ancient connection between Africa and South America. This discovery was detailed in a study led by paleontologist Louis L. Jacobs and his team, published by the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science. The Dinosaur Dispersal Corridor: Connecting Two Continents The study of dinosaur footprints found in the Koum Basin of Cameroon and the Borborema region of Brazil has opened a new chapter in paleontological research. These two sites, located over 3,700 miles apart, are preserved snapshots of a time when Africa and South America were still part of the same landmass. This early Cretaceous landscape, which existed about 120 million years ago, was a lush and vibrant environment where large plant-eating dinosaurs and their predators roamed freely across expansive river valleys and wetlands. Geologists have identified these areas as part of a once-continuous corridor, called the Dinosaur Dispersal Corridor, through which dinosaurs migrated between the continents. This corridor, formed by river valleys, allowed species to move easily between the lands now separated by vast oceans. The evidence found in both regions – including the remarkably preserved tracks and surrounding sediments – suggests that dinosaurs traversed this bridge just before it was engulfed by the rising South Atlantic Ocean.
